1. It's no secret I haven't really taken to blogging, but I definitely feel I am trying a little more. I haven't committed my time to updating my blog as often as I should and I realise that if I did commit more time it would be easier to identify where I need to develop. I still do not feel massively comfortable writing about my development but I feel that I can identify areas I need to develop by talking through them. This is evidenced in my recent appraisal - which as soon as my line manager has written up I can upload.
2. The line manager I had when writing my PDP has since left the Company so I have had to adapt the way I communicate. My new line manager (Finance Director) is a figures man so I now try to appeal to this. I have also since recruited a HR administrator so for the first time I am someone's line manager, I think this has naturally improved my assertiveness but has also made me more self-aware. Reflecting on my behaviour it's interesting to see how I interact differently with my line manager and my direct report according to their own personality, age and position within the Company.
3. I still have my work mobile switched on at weekends but I have definitely been able to strike a work-life balance. Since recruiting a HR Administrator I have not been into the office at a weekend once. I did feel a little stressed previously but I also like the pressure and like to work. I can see now however that spending more time with my friends and family and doing activities that I enjoy has had a positive impact on me and I can now switch off from work, it's not constantly on my mind. Having said that I have bought my laptop home this weekend because I have had a lot of time of recently on annual leave - I don't want to feel too out-of-touch with what is going on.
4. At the beginning of our financial year (November) I requested a copy of the salary budgets and put forward the idea that the CEO doesn't need to sign off every hiring request because I could do it myself. I now approve/deny hiring requests based on each departments salary budget and convince finance if I feel there is justification to go over budget that we should. This works well, it not only improves my understanding of interpreting financial information but it also saves a great deal of time in the recruitment process.
